Few facts about nutrition and health are known with 100 percent certainty. This is particularly true for the case of understanding what makes us overweight and obese. Nevertheless, there is one crystal clear fact that underlies just about all of the weight gain that happens in the world:

It only happens to people who eat an industrialized, Western diet.

Traditional culture after traditional culture becomes exposed to the Western way of eating— to sugar, to processed foods, to seed oils—and their previously sleek bodies become overweight almost instantly.

Everywhere you go in the world, this way of eating makes people sick and fat.

The obvious solution is to revert back to a more “traditional” way of eating that excludes processed foods. In this article i help you heal your metabolism by reclaiming the healthy, nourishing foods of the earth and by avoiding the apparently toxic effects of the Western diet.

But — you might ask — what is it about the Western diet that is so bad? Is it the meat consumption? The salt? The sugar? The soy? There are many potential culprits, and knowing the right ones to blame will help us marshal our defenses and healing tools all the more effectively. Fortunately, the science has advanced far enough that certain brilliant people (thank you, Chris Masterjohn and Stephan Guyenet), have brought important pieces of the puzzle to light. Thanks to their hard work along with that of many other researchers, I believe I have a fair understanding of what’s going on in the body when it becomes overweight and the certain types of healing that need to happen to support fat loss.

Overweight = Overeating + Metabolic Damage

As I have stated previously, both the quantity and the quality of the food you eat matter for weight gain.

This is a large part of the reason processed foods are the villain of this whole story. Not only are they full of toxic components that inflame your body and break your metabolism (like trans fat), they also hijack your appetite and make you overeat.

Processed foods are specifically designed to make you addicted to them. This is how companies profit! You wouldn’t eat a whole bag of potato chips if you became full after one serving. You wouldn’t see people with 98 cans of soda in their shopping carts if they felt satiated by the soda. These foods are designed to make you buy more, which ultimately means that your addiction to them will grow exponentially. Their express purpose is to prevent you from ever feeling full, and to taste so good you will never be able to resist their call.

Fortunately these two problems — eating too many calories and having a broken metabolism — have the same solution: natural, satisfying, healing foods. Processed foods make you eat too much, and natural foods have natural satisfying power. Processed foods also contain toxins that impair metabolism and break your ability to burn fat. Natural foods contain vitamins and minerals that heal organs and boost metabolism.
