We all eat to stay healthy and live a long life, but did you know that certain foods will kill you if they aren’t prepared properly? Here are some popular everyday foods that can be deadly if not properly prepared.
10. Honey
Honey that has not been pasteurized can cause headaches and, in severe cases, death. Pyrolizidine alkaloids are a toxic toxin contained in this sticky, sweet golden liquid. If you consume more than a teaspoon of unpasteurized honey, extreme nausea, fatigue, and vomiting can occur, with symptoms lasting up to 24h.
9. Potatoes
Your carb option can also be fatal, as ordinary potatoes can be harmful if eaten at the wrong stage of their development. Ingesting sprouted potatoes, as well as their leaves and stems, may be poisonous since glycoalkaloids are present. This toxin is also present in nightshade plants.
When you don’t use potatoes right away after buying them at the supermarket, you’re likely to see sprouts on them. Sprouts will appear if they are left in too damp or light conditions. Even if the sprouts are sliced off, it is not recommended that you use these potatoes. As a result, throw them away right away because the poison might have soaked into the potato.
According to scientists, a bad 16-ounce potato (equivalent to one baked potato) can affect a 100-pound human.
8. Cashews
Your local health food store’s “raw cashews” are not necessarily raw cashews. If they were, they would contain urushiol, the same toxin contained in poison ivy. The “raw” cashews you see at farmers markets and supermarkets have been steamed to eliminate the deadly chemical.
Only a handful of raw cashews can cause serious allergies in most people, but it can be fatal for those who are especially allergic to poison ivy.
7. Red Kidney Beans
There are a few foods that raw food diet followers can avoid. Lectins are a form of toxin found in red kidney beans that destroy stomach cells. Soak red kidney beans in clean water for at least five hours before eating them to reap the health benefits.
6. Rhubarb
Rhubarb makes a fantastic pie filling, particularly in the summer, but be careful not to include its leaves by mistake. Oxalic acid, found in rhubarb, is a factor that causes kidney stones. Since it takes 11 pounds of rhubarb leaves to cause poisoning and death, it could be a long time until it has a serious impact on someone’s health. So, while you’re cooking, keep rhubarb stalks in mind.
5. Cherries
Something lurks within cherries that may seem harmless, but has the potential to cause serious harm. Even if most people swallow or spit them out, crushing them unwittingly releases cyanogenic compounds, which our bodies convert to cyanide. There’s no need to be concerned if cherry pits are swallowed whole because they’re just toxic when crushed or split.
4. Hotdogs
Hotdogs are a particularly hazardous product, since they are the leading cause of choking deaths in children in the United States. So, if you’re feeding your kids hotdogs, make sure to cut them up into bite-sized bits so they can eat them safely.
3. Cassava
You’ve had cassava if you want boba in your milk tea. This vegetable, also known as tapioca, is most commonly grown in equatorial countries and contains hydrogen cyanide, which can contaminate the body if eaten raw or without sufficient cooking time and procedure.
Cassava is available in two flavors: sweet and sour. Sweet cassava has just 20mg of cyanide per root, making it 50 times less lethal than bitter cassava. Even so, if eaten wrongly, it contains enough poison to kill an adult cow on the spot.
2. Lima Beans
Who knew cyanide could be found in so many common foods? This poisonous substance can also be used in lima beans. Linamarin is found in raw lima beans, and when consumed, it decomposes into hydrogen cyanide. To extract the cyanide in lima beans, cook them thoroughly (uncovered) in a pot of boiling water, then drain.
1. Nutmeg
When news of nutmeg poisoning was announced, this spice caused quite a stir. It triggers myristicin poisoning, which can be fatal, when taken in large quantities. Nutmeg poisoning signs include headaches, nausea, and even hallucinations. A small amount of nutmeg is more than enough to enjoy the flavor while also preventing the deadly portion from activating.
